Standing tall amongst 800 items used or owned by some of Hollywoods biggest names, the humble blue and white pinafore dress worn by Judy Garland in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ realised a respectable US$480, ooo final price at Julien’s Auctions earlier this month.
The Wizard Of Oz has captured the imagination of generations and ranks as one of the most successful films of all time. Along with the Yellow Brick Road, Dorothy’s red shoes and the Tin Man, the very plain dress worn by Dorothy Gale as she was swept from Kansas to the Land Of Oz remains one of the films most iconic images and undoubtedly one of Hollywoods most iconic costumes
Although there are identical dresses that were made for the film tests and the production, this was the only dress to be seen on the big screen when the film was released in 1939.
The “Icons and Idols 2012: Hollywood” auction attracted many interested collectors and investors and, aside from Doroty’s dress, included a large collection of items that belonged to mega-stars of the past such as Elizabeth Taylor, Steve McQueen, Marilyn Monroe, Julie Andrews, Jayne Mansfield, Errol Flynn, Bette Davis, Clark Gable, Orson Welles and Cecil B. DeMille.
