Sotheby’s ‘Contemporary Art Evening’ sale achieved their highest auction total in history. Up for auction were major works by some of the biggest names in modern art; Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol and Mark Rothko among others.
Mark Rothko’s “No. 1 (Royal Red and Blue)” was the standout work on the night. After residing in one collection for 30 years it now holds the honourable position of the second highest amount received at auction for a painting by the artist.
Works by Andy Warhol gathered a combined total of US$ 54, 000, 000, well above the estimate and led by “Green Disaster (Green Disaster Twice)” and a collection of works-on-paper by the artist achieving a total of US$ 32, 200, 000 led by his well known work, “Suicide”, from 1964, bringing in a healthy US$16, 322, 500, several times the previous auction price of US$ 132,000 set at Sotheby’s NY in November 1992.
The previous record for a Sotheby’s auction was the May 2008 Contemporary Art Evening Sale which totaled $362,037,000.
